At the top of our “Best Ski Resorts in Austria” list is St Anton, a ski area which is perfect for expert skiers who want to challenge themselves. Reaching heights of 2,800 metres, St Anton resort has the longest downhill piste in the Arlberg, a hill that is aptly named “The White Thrill”. The region also holds an important place in ski history as the site of the first ski club in the Alps which began in 1901. While not recommended for beginners, there are still plenty of slopes for intermediates as well as a fantastic range of shops, café’s, inns and hotels for you to enjoy after the day is over. For a place that ski’s hard, St Anton certainly parties even harder with the likes of Mooserwirt and Krazy Kanguruh considered some of the top après bars on the planet.

Next up is Lech Arlberg, a pretty village that has found itself popular with many royals and celebs over the years. As soon as you arrive, you’ll understand exactly why it’s number two on our Best Ski Resorts in Austria list. It’s old wood and stone buildings are situated beautifully along the riverside, paired with a traditional Austrian church with a vast backdrop of downhill stopes for all skill types. It certainly gives off an air of luxury with plenty of 4 and 5 star accommodation to choose from, all situated within a small and quiet atmosphere. If you’re an off-piste skier, you’ll lover the back country terrain of Lech Arlberg while for families looking for some beginner-friendly slopes, there is a wide range of terrain with some budget-friendly lodgings to match.

Arguably one of Britain’s favourite ski resorts, Mayrhofen gained popularity back in the Seventies as one of the original migration points for British skiers. Its allure has never faded and families, groups, beginners and experts alike continue to revel in the beauty of Mayrhofen resort and its incredible value for money. There are two mountains that make up the local ski area, the first Ahorn which is described as having “cruisey” slopes and Penken which delivers a more adrenaline-filled adventure for expert skiers and snowboarders. Christmas time is particularly magical in Mayrhofen with the old-school charm of the village coming to life with markets and carollers.

While not the biggest and most popular ski resort in Austria, St Christoph had to make our list for those looking for a smaller, quiet village with plenty of charm and magic. Only a 10 minutes’ drive from St Anton, St Christoph sits remotely near the Arlberg Pass as one of the highest ski resorts in the Alps. The 350km of piste which link to St Anton, Lech and Zürs, is largely filled with blue slopes so there’s plenty to do for intermediates and experts. There are only 25 buildings in total in St Christoph, most of them cosy hotels and chalets and delicious restaurants for evening leisure. If you prefer a livelier night out, it’s not difficult to head 10 minutes towards St Anton before coming home to the peace and quiet of St Christoph.
